Household Principles for Children Based on the Old Testament

Shamelessly stolen...

Household Principles for Children Based on the Old Testament (Lamentations of a Father)

• Laws of Forbidden Places:

Of the beasts of the field, and of the fishes of the sea, and of all foods that are acceptable in my sight you may eat, but not in the living room. Of the hoofed animals, broiled or ground into burgers, you may eat, but not in the living room. Of the cloven-hoofed animal, plain or with cheese, you may eat, but not in the living room. Of the cereal grains, of the corn and of the wheat and of the oats, and of all the cereals that are of bright color and unknown provenance you may eat, but not in the living room. Of quiescently frozen dessert and of all frozen after-meal treats you may eat, but absolutely not in the living room. Of the juices and other beverages, yea, even of those in sippy-cups, you may drink, but not in the living room, neither may you carry such therein. Indeed, when you reach the place where the living room carpet begins, of any food or beverage there you may not eat, neither may you drink. But if you are sick, and are lying down and watching something, then may you eat in the living room.

• Laws When at Table:

And if you are seated in your high chair, or in a chair such as a greater person might use, keep your legs and feet below you as they were. Neither raise up your knees, nor place your feet upon the table, for that is an abomination to me. Yes, even when you have an interesting bandage to show, your feet upon the table are an abomination, and worthy of rebuke. Drink your milk as it is given you, neither use on it any utensils, nor fork, nor knife, nor spoon, for that is not what they are for; if you will dip your blocks in the milk, and lick it off, you will be sent away. When you have drunk, let the empty cup then remain upon the table, and do not bite it upon its edge and by your teeth hold it to your face in order to make noises in it sounding like a duck; for you will be sent away. When you chew your food, keep your mouth closed until you have swallowed, and do not open it to show your brother or your sister what is within; I say to you, do not so, even if your brother or your sister has done the same to you. Eat your food only; do not eat that which is not food; neither seize the table between your jaws, nor use the raiment of the table to wipe your lips. I say again to you, do not touch it, but leave it as it is. And though your stick of carrot does indeed resemble a marker, draw not with it upon the table, even in pretend, for we do not do that, that is why. And though the pieces of broccoli are very like small trees, do not stand them upright to make a forest, because we do not do that, that is why. Sit just as I have told you, and do not lean to one side or the other nor slide down until you are nearly slid away. Heed me; for if you sit like that, your hair will go into the syrup. And now behold, even as I have said, it has come to pass.

• Laws Pertaining to Dessert:

For we judge between the plate that is unclean and the plate that is clean, saying first, if the plate is clean, then you shall have dessert. But of the unclean plate, the laws are these: If you have eaten most of your meat, and two bites of your peas with each bite consisting of not less than three peas each, or in total six peas, eaten where I can see, and you have also eaten enough of your potatoes to fill two forks, both forkfuls eaten where I can see, then you shall have dessert. But if you eat a lesser number of peas, and yet you eat the potatoes, still you shall not have dessert; and if you eat the peas, yet leave the potatoes uneaten, you shall not have dessert, no, not even a small portion thereof. And if you try to deceive by moving the potatoes or peas around with a fork, that it may appear you have eaten what you have not, you will fall into iniquity. And I will know, and you shall have no dessert.

• Laws on Screaming:

Do not scream; for it is as if you scream all the time. If you are given a plate on which two foods you do not wish to touch each other, are touching each other, your voice rises up even to the ceiling, while you point to the offense with the finger of your right hand; but I say to you, scream not, only remonstrate gently with the server, that the server may correct the fault. Likewise if you receive a portion of fish from which every piece of herbal seasoning has not been scraped off, and the herbal seasoning is loathsome to you and steeped in vileness, again I say, refrain from screaming. Though the vileness overwhelm you, and cause you to faint unto death, make not that sound from within your throat, neither cover your face, nor press your fingers to your nose. For even I have made the fish as it should be; behold, I eat it myself, yet do not die.

• Concerning Face and Hands:

Cast your countenance upward to the light, and lift your eyes to the hills, that I may more easily wash you off. For the stains are upon you; even to the very back of your head, there is rice thereon. And in the breast pocket of your garment, and upon the tie of your shoe, rice and other fragments are distributed in a manner wonderful to see. Only hold yourself still; hold still, I say. Give each finger in its turn for my examination thereof, and also each thumb. Lo, how iniquitous they appear. What I do is as it must be; and you shall not go hence until I have done.

• Various Other Laws, Statutes, and Ordinances:

Bite not, lest you be cast into quiet time. Neither drink of your own bath water, nor of the bath water of any kind; nor rub your feet on bread, even if it be in the package; nor rub yourself against cars, not against any building; nor eat sand. Leave the cat alone, for what has the cat done, that you should so afflict it with tape? And hum not the humming in your nose as I read, nor stand between the light and the book. Indeed, you will drive me to madness. Nor forget what I said about the tape.

Afternoon at the ER

We had just gotten home from church and DH and I were fixing lunch. The kids were in the
living room playing. All of a sudden, Josh starts crying. We run in there and he said he
moved his head backwards and now his neck is hurting.

After determining if he could move it at all, I put an ice pack on it. That lasted about
10 seconds, when a spasm of some sort went through his neck and Josh screamed. At this
point, I figured he had a pinched nerve.

I wasn't far off. After spending 4 hours in the ER yesterday afternoon, he's now on
valium and Lortab. :) He was having muscle spasms in his neck muscle...basically, a very
bad crick in his neck.

As soon as the dr touched it, she could feel how tight the muscle was. So, they gave him
some valium for a muscle relaxer and Lortab for the pain.

He's definitely feeling better, but still quite sensitive. If he moves his head backwards, his neck hurts.

We never could find a pharmacy that was open late on a Sunday. Our insurance won't pay
for Walgreens, so that basically leaves CVS...

The dr said to keep him home at least 1 day to give it time to feel better. He keeps
forgetting it hurts and then moves the wrong way. :(

Poor guy - he was in so much pain yesterday afternoon. He would finally get comfy and
then it would hit him again. :( I felt so bad for him.

On the other hand, I was absolutely STARVING by the time we got out of there. We had
just fixed lunch, but he was in so much pain, that I just left mine sitting there (we were
only having sandwiches). Josh did take 1/2 of his sandwich with him and somehow managed
to eat it on the way to the ER. Thank goodness Children's Hospital is close. I'd hate to
think of the crap we would have gone through if we went to the regular hospital.

Phil went to get Josh's prescriptions filled this morning. CVS doesn't carry Valium in
liquid form, so we wound up at Walgreens afterall. Luckily, it wasn't very expensive...who cares if insurance pays for it or not. :)

Josh is still stiff this morning, but doing better. He's at home with mom right now
watching Chicken Little. :)

14 months 4 days

Callie is officially walking. After a couple of months of taking steps, she finally has gotten brave enough to walk across the living room! :)

Emma probably won't be too far behind her, but she's not really been trying anymore to walk. She can walk around the furniture and walls faster than walking across the room. HA!!

Callie was so proud of herself. Everytime she would walk across the room, she would stop and clap and laugh at herself. :)

Josh has learned to snap his fingers, too! At 9:00 last night, he came downstairs and had to show us. :) He was so proud of himself, too!!

Easter Weekend

It's been one busy weekend and I'm glad to be home!

We went to Asheville, NC Thursday evening. The girls were ready to be out of the van! :) We got to Asheville a little before 7:00 and everyone was ready for some food. So, we went to a place Phil really likes called Asiana...it's basically an overgrown Chinese buffet. It has a pretty decent buffet with sushi (and non Chinese food for the kids).

After supper, we drove around forever finding a place to stay. We wound up at the first place we went to. We got a 2 room jacuzzi suite. It was pretty nice - lots of play space and a big ol jacuzzi tub in the middle of the living room (so much for any privacy).

It was 9:00 at night when we got checked in - the girls were hyper! They were laughing hysterically and exploring everything once we got to the room. Josh was having a pretty good time, too!

We didn't get in bed (all 5 of us) until 11:00 that night! The girls could not go to sleep. They woke up at 7:30 the next morning. We finally made it to breakfast (in the hotel) and then came back up and got ready.

We told Josh we were going to have a fun day. Well, he kept asking when we were going to have fun. :) I guess he didn't much care for our drive downtown and a little bit of shopping.

We ate lunch at a place called The Depot. It was really good and a Josh got to see a train go by the window - he decided he was having fun now.

After that, we went to the Nature Center. It was a mini zoo with "local" wild animals in it. There were otters, bears, deer, cougars, bobcats, birds, snakes, etc. in it. Josh LOVED it! It was a really nice little place.

We went back to the room after that to crash a little bit...didn't last long. :) Everyone got hungry again!

On Saturday, we went to Kingsport to visit with Phil's family. His brother and his family were there from Lexington. It was great seeing them again.

Mike and Katie (niece and her husband) got to see the girls for the first time. We also found out that Mike & Katie are expecting! It's still very early, but I hope things progress quite nicely.

We finally hit the road around 8:00 that night and got home around 10:00. Luckily, everyone went to bed easily.

We had to actually set the alarm to get up in time for church. :) We NEVER have to do that...the girls always wake up on time. This time, we had to wake them up.

After church, we came home and decorated Easter Eggs (finally). Josh loved it! After the eggs dried, we went outside and hid them. Josh had a blast.

Oh! The girls turned 14 months old yesterday! Wow!

My Big Boy!

We were scurrying around this morning getting ready for work and school (as usual). Josh gets himself dressed and he was being a little slow about it today.

Well, all of a sudden, he disappeared (he was getting ready in our room). Anyway, I finally go track him down and he was in his room with a book open trying to tie the drawstring on his sweatpants.

He was so cute! One of his books has pictures showing how to tie your shoes, so he thought he could look at the picture and do the same for his drawstring.

It was so sweet!!! I stood behind him and helped him tie it, making him push the string through and such. He was so proud of himself for tying his drawstring! :)

I was impressed that he knew exactly where the instructions were and that he was really working hard at following them.

Stuff

This work business is getting old! LOL I had to work late last yesterday. Granted, I finished at 5:30, but I started before 7:30 yesterday morning. I'm used to finishing around 4:00.

Anyway, I worked at home yesterday afternoon, so it worked out just fine. The girls were pretty good. They slept a good part of the afternoon. When Josh came home from school, he really helped me watch the girls while I finished work. THANK YOU, JOSH!

Emma's doing much better now. She woke up around 10:45 last night, but was asleep again by 11:00 and then slept the whole night...thank goodness!

I'm going to clean out Josh's room this weekend and clear out the crib (it's still up from when he was a baby). Right now, I'm using that crib as a storage unit. Well, it's past time for the girls to be in their own beds. Hopefully, it won't be long before they have their own room!

Josh said he wanted Emma to be in his room because he wanted to come get us when she woke up crying. :) Well, I told him Callie woke up sometimes, too. So, he decided the girls need to take turns sleeping in his room.

Our house is much too small for the 5 of us, but it looks like we're going to stay here for another year. Phil's going to clear out his office, so the girls can have a bedroom. We're going to clear out the dining room (which is my office) and put Phil's office there. That means we need to get rid of an old piano. It's badly out of tune and many of the keys stick or don't play at all. It was given to us, so we're going to keep passing it on.

We're going to get a storage unit (or buy a storage shed and put up at mom and dad's). That way, we can clear out the garage again and maybe park our cars in there again! Yeah, right.

I'm not sure when we're going to do all of this. We barely make it through the day now...not sure where we're going to get the extra energy and time to clear out all of these rooms. HA!

Emma's Surgery and Update

Emma had her 2nd surgery on Friday (3/31/06). This surgery repaired her soft palate, touched up her lip and put tubes in her ears.

We had to be at the hospital at 9:00 Friday morning. Emma could have clear liquids up to 7:00, so at 6:45, we gave her a bottle of apple juice. That probably wasn't the best idea. She's not used to drinking that much juice at a time. So, when we pulled into the hospital parking garage, she threw some of it up. Luckily, we had an extra outfit. So, I changed her with just minutes to go before we had to be in admissions.

We were admitted pretty quickly and taken to a room. We wound up staying there a little longer than planned. Emma's surgery was scheduled at 10:30, but it was closer to 11:45 before we went back. Emma did really well during her wait. She played some and took a nap - never got fussy. :)

Dr. Little (ENT) talked to us for a few minutes before going back to put tubes in. He came back about 15 minutes later with an update - she was doing well. Her ears were very full of fluid.

The next part of the surgery lasted quite a bit longer.

We finally got to see Emma again around 4:00 in recovery. We had one minor setback. We were expecting to put a solid appliance back in her mouth, but her gums hadn't lined up enough, so they put another expander appliance in. So, we have to go back for the next several months to turn the screw again so her gums will line up better...they have to be lined up better before the bone graft (which will bridge the gums together).

Overall, everything was a success. We had to stay in recovery a little longer than expected, because there were no beds for her. Luckily, they let us come back to recovery with her (usually a no-no). We held her the whole time - once we were there, she didn't want to be put down.

However, she was the star of the recovery section. All of the nurses just loved her because she was being so good and curious! :)

After a quick supper, I came back upstairs to stay with Emma until we were moved to the PICU. Phil went on home to clean up and get some sleep. We figured it was best if one of us got a good night's sleep so they could relieve the other one the next day. :)

We were moved to the PICU around 7:30. Emma stayed in my arms from that time until 8:00 Saturday morning. I put her down twice to use the bathroom and change her diaper. We stayed in that nice comfy (yeah, right) chair the hospital provides. I think we slept about 3 hours that night. Needless to say, I was exhausted!

We were able to go home around noon on Saturday. Emma finally started eating and drinking and she was actually playing some that morning!

I took a little nap Saturday afternoon. It took awhile to get settled in. Mom brought Josh & Callie back home. A little while later, our friend, Cindy, brought us supper (YUM!).

Emma's doing really great now. The first night or 2 were a little long. She woke up a couple of times, but it wasn't too bad. She slept almost all night last night. I think she woke up once and wimpered, but went right back to sleep.

She's really bounced back from this surgery quickly!
